While normally sheds tiny bits of dead skin cells, some people are prone to scaling larger clumps of skin which lead to conspicuous flaking. According to a leading theory, dandruff is caused by the yeast-like fungus, Pityrosporum Ovale, which occurs naturally on the scalp. An overabundance causes inflammation, and skin cells may over-produce, stick together in clumps, and fall off as flakes. Other factors that may contribute to the development of dandruff include emotional and physical stresses and cold temperatures.
Dandruff is characterized by excessive dry, flaky scales and an itchy scalp. Persistent dandruff may involve severe, clumpy flaking and sometimes an irritated, red scalp.
